R. Sidney Lieberman Music Competition Rules

  • Eligible students must have a recital program of between 25-30 minutes in order to compete.
  • Your formatted program (using a Department template) must also include the timings of your pieces. Failure to include timing of musical works will result in disqualification.
  • Each applied teacher may send a maximum of two student candidates from their studio.
  • A panel of five faculty judges or invited judges will score the competition.
  • Contestants will be evaluated on musicality, technique, interpretation, stage presence and style.
  • A minimum of two different styles or style periods must be represented.
  • Memorization is required for voice and piano (oratorio and chamber music excepted). Memorization is optional for others.
  • All students selected to compete must have published scores of all music present at the audition. Failure to have these scores will result in disqualification from the competition. Published scores must be clearly marked as to where the work is found within a larger collection.
  • A minimum of 10 minutes and maximum of 15 minutes will be heard by the faculty judges.
  • The contestant will select their first piece. The judges will choose other works.
  • The judges may also request a portion of any selections and may ask the contestant to end a piece early or start a work in the middle.
  • Accompanists are not provided for this competition. Students requiring an accompanist must secure and pay that person.
  • No changes in repertoire may be made to the recital program between the competition and the winner’s recital.
  • The first place winner performs for 25-30 minutes. The second place winner performs for 20 minutes.
